Addison, Texas. June 5, 2009. –Shelby Systems, Inc. held its 19th International Shelby Conference (ISC) for its software users last week in Texas, centering the theme of the event on Building Community. The InterContinental Dallas Hotel in Addison hosted the hundreds of attendees from 30 states and Guam who attended over 200 breakout training and informational sessions, heard two dynamic keynote speakers, and built their community ties with each other, with the Shelby Systems staff, and with their solution provider partners.
ISC 2009 was the springboard for two important initiatives for Shelby Systems, both introduced before the opening session’s keynote address. The first was the roll-out of a new Shelby Community web site. The Community will be a vital link between the company and its customers as well as a forum for user-to-user dialogue.
The second initiative is a research project undertaken with Southern Growth Studio as a partner with Shelby Systems to bring the customers’ experience and expectations with the Shelby v.5 software into clearer focus and to lay a strong foundation for the future.
In the opening session Anthony Coppedge, church media consultant and passionate “Technology Evangelist,” set the tone of Building Community with his presentation on “The Reason Your Church Must Twitter.” The presentation was based on his recently released book of the same name, which attendees were given as part of their registration.
Peppered among the more traditional training topics on Shelby Systems’ v.5 software and Arena Church Ministry Software were many subjects that furthered the idea of networking in the church community, such as The Power of Networking,” presented by Patti Malott, owner of Upright Ministries and consultant for church financial services.
Every church staff member could find a series of topics right for him or her, including business administrators and directors. For instance, Phill Martin, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of Church Business Administration in Dallas, gave presentations on “Trends in Administration,” “Setting Staff Compensation,” and “Trust and Betrayal in Church Staffs.”
Each year ISC attendees can apply for continuing professional education (CPE) credit for classes completed during the conference. As an extra bonus for attendees of ISC 2009, this year’s conference was the first opportunity for Shelby Systems customers to obtain CEUs for NACBA continuing education credits. In fact, Shelby Systems is the first church management software company to qualify its annual conference with NACBA as part of the NRCEP Program. This designation greatly supported customers who are seeking FCBA certification in 2009 and will benefit conference attendees in the future as well.
Music is often a highlight of the conference. This year it preceded the opening keynote address with a time of praise and worship led by the praise team from The Village Church, with Next Generation Worship Pastor Isaac Wimberley. Their music also blessed the closing session on Friday. The banquet on Thursday included a concert by LaDonna Gatlin, whose combination of inspiring stories and musical talent touched all who attended.
The conference ended with renowned speaker Zig Ziglar. His message included a challenge to keep the “home court advantage strong and always do the right thing” and an inspirational, living example to “focus on what you can do, not what you can’t do.”
Even before the ISC 2009 event began, preparations have been underway for International Shelby Conference in 2010, to be held June 16 – 18 in Atlanta, Georgia. Next year’s event will be the 20th annual user conference, a milestone that Shelby Systems is excited about sharing with its customers. Visit here for more information.
